BAKER & MCKENZIE

Comment: A highly recommended M&A practice which again added notable clients to its portfolio. The arrival of an energy sector team from Taylor Wessing led immediately to work for Alba. Further new contacts, e.g. Heraeus, and new spots on the panels of German corporates proved even more fruitful. The German lawyers’ extremely strong network and visibility in the Asian (esp. Chinese) market are almost a USP in the German competitive environment; these again generated several major transactions. Combined with solid, ongoing connections to companies like ZF and stronger visibility in public takeovers thanks to broader corporate expertise, this progress almost overshadows the fact that the Lufthansa contact is no longer as close in transactions following the departure of a central partner last year.
Strengths: Strong roots among German corporates; international network and experience in cross-border deals. German-Chinese transactions.
Recommended: Dr. Nikolaus Reinhuber, Dr. Ingo Strauss, Dr. Florian Kästle, Dr. Thorsten Seidel, Gerald Schumann, Dr. Thomas Gilles, Christian Atzler, Wilhelm Hebing.
Practice: Cross-border practice with notable Chinese-German deal flow. Düsseldorf: strong advice to industrial corporates. Berlin: smaller practice but focus on ?pharmaceuticals and healthcare. (10 equity partners, 11 salary partners, 1 counsel, 29 associates, 1 of counsel)
Clients: ?? Alba regarding investment by Chinese investor in two corporate divisions; Dassault Systèmes on acquisition of CST; Sulzer on acquisition of Geka; ZF Friedrichshafen on sale of Cherry; BizLink Holding on acquisition of Leoni’s electrical equipment production division.
