Comment: A leading firm for M&A which, with the high-volume Host Europe and NXP transactions, showed how ties to Asian and US clients are growing in importance. The lead in the NXP deal was played by a young Hamburg partner, which highlighted the strength of the young partner team as well as the broad visibility of the M&A practice, even at the smaller offices. The appointment of an M&A partner in Berlin was another example of this and underscored the importance of this office. As in previous years, good contacts among numerous German corporates paid off; these are broader than ever, both regionally and in terms of sectors. The renowned restructuring practice was an additional deal generator, e.g. work for Vögele.
Strengths: Large group of younger partners with cross-border activity. Public takeovers. Strong in insolvency-related M&A.
Development potential: GL is not as visible in large banking sector transactions as Freshfields or Linklaters, but this is likely to remain one of the key sectors for complex M&A projects in Germany in the years ahead. The banking and finance practice has been boosted in recent years with some new additions who the corporate practice has yet to capitalize on fully.
