Comment: Several competitors note the “great development” of this firm recommended in trademarks and unfair competition – and this was before they became aware it would invest heavily in soft IP as part of its expansion strategy. In July 2017, the entire Hamburg office of Preu Bohlig joined CBH, incl. experienced partner von Schultz and the already well-regarded Eble. This step also meant a broadening of expertise, as the new partners are known for their work for renowned luxury goods manufacturers like LVMH – a client base CBH had no access to before now. In Munich, another Preu partner came on board: Dr. Stephan Gruber is primarily active in patents but advises some clients on soft IP. Independently of this, the core Cologne team energetically worked on building up activity and developing new fields of advice, e.g. on the interface with IT. CBH was thus able to compensate for the fact that it no longer appears as often for long-time client Haribo. The generation change initiated long ago is now complete: senior partner Dr. Manfred Hecker, who was best known of late for advice on betting and gaming law, switched to of counsel status.
Strengths: Unfair competition advice related to betting and gaming law.
Development potential: The integration of the new partners and offices is a monumental task for the whole firm – the IP practice, which accounts for the largest group of laterals proportionately, must assemble a team if it hopes to be viewed as a unified force.
Recommended: Dr. Ingo Jung, Nadja Siebertz, Prof. Dr. Markus Ruttig, Dr. Detlef von Schultz, Sebastian Eble.
Practice: In Cologne, advice and litigation for predominantly German clients (e.g. startup companies) on trademarks and unfair competition, often also strategically in the run-up to and during advertising campaigns. Formal trademark law, esp. for Mittelstand clients. In Hamburg, product piracy and border confiscation advice to luxury goods clients. (7 partners, 8 associates, 3 of counsel)
Clients: ?? Adelheid in series of trademark proceedings; Obi in color trademark dispute; Saint-Gobain Glass on design protection; all-round trademark activity for Uniwheels; litigation for Victor Group against DUH; trademark infringement litigation for Zacobi; Daimler on trademarks; Music Store and RheinEnergie on unfair competition; ongoing IP activity for Diesel, Linda, Maxim Markenprodukte, Metten Stein + Design, WM Beautysystems.
