Comment: This Essen-based firm is one of the leading outfits in the Ruhr Valley. Known in the market primarily for its extensive corporate, employment and banking advice to Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, SOH also has a mixed client base made up of regional Mittelstand companies and nationally active corporations. The firm’s many years of work on behalf of family companies and family offices is giving rise to follow-on work in company succession and trusts. The medical law practice, which is also renowned in the market, acts extremely independently here. Alongside the medical lawyers, however, it is the employment lawyers who tend to profit from the firm’s extensive work for hospitals. In terms of its own staff, SOH has experienced a few upheavals: one setback was the departure of young partner Dr. Lars Kolks (to Aldi Nord), who is well respected in the market. Although he moved to key client Aldi, he was still a prominent figure in the planned future development of the corporate practice. This is not the first time a partner has switched from SOH to Aldi – an established name partner was also lost to the company a few years ago. The firm managed to appoint another partner experienced in corporate and banking, but expansion has come to a standstill for the time being. Moreover, the real estate practice lost partner Dr. Daniel Fischer to Beiten Burkhardt. Thanks to its strong reputation, however, the firm still appeals to lawyers from large firms. After already attracting a salary partner from Freshfields the previous year, the real estate practice has now grown by an associate from Taylor Wessing.
