Comment: Ongoing corporate advice in the cable sector is a major focus of this firm recommended in Frankfurt. Along with its close connection to the M&A practice, corporate litigation and notary advice are other specialties. Its merger with media firm Kornmeier in October 2016 brought in new clients, e.g. Big City Beats in a cooperation contract with Korean company MPC. From its position in the cable sector the firm is moving into other business areas. Last year, Schalast acquired a majority share in the Hamburg legal tech firm Clarius Legal, with whose help the firm plans to offer standardized advice formats. Clarius’ founding partner Dr. Georg Berger, who was a partner at Schalast from 2005 to 2008, came on board again as a partner and leader of the telecom practice. In fall, the firm gained a dispute resolution and arbitration team around Prof. Dr. Hanns-Christian Salger from Salgar. He will be leading the dispute resolution practice as an equity partner; his clients include Creditreform and Opel Bank. Two associates and one of counsel followed him to Schalast.
Strengths: Advice to the cable sector.
Development potential: The firm has taken a few measures to position itself better in the market. The legal tech investment work should now be established alongside individual advice, and the integration of the new team should be continued.
Recommended: Prof. Dr. Christoph Schalast (corporate, telecoms), Dr. Andreas Walter (“outstandingly competent, fast and very pleasant”, client).

MHB Bank AG on implementing a refinancing structure; Octane Capital Advisory on portfolio acquisition; Hyundai Capital Bank Europe on full banking license; Fachverband Rundfunk- and Breitbandkommunikation (broadcasting and broadband communication association) on proceedings before the EC; Big City Beats on cooperation contract with MPC Ltd.
