DLA PIPER

Comment: Recommended firm in real estate. DLA has an asset not only in its broad approach, which encompasses transactions as well as asset management and project development, but also in its good integration within the international firm network. This was demonstrated by a series of attractive portfolio deals and single-asset transactions, e.g. for Deutsche Fonds Holding. The move of team head Dr. Carsten Loll to Linklaters was a blow. But the profile was not focused entirely on him, thanks to the high degree of partner and counsel specialization in all facets of real estate. DLA further added to this specialist expertise by bringing in a seven-strong team from King & Wood, headed by the up-and-coming Reubekeul, who took over joint team management with Mühlen after Loll’s departure. The development of the finance practice is noteworthy: it mainly advises banks, but also borrowers with the real estate lawyers. Schwem’s team has constantly broadened its portfolio in recent years, e.g. with a mortgage bank. Competitors note this development, too, and praise the practice as “first class”.
Strengths: Transactions, project development, high degree of specialization.
Development potential: The DLA real estate team’s European network works excellently. Further potential lies in the US and Asia. The contacts of the new team from King & Wood could pave the way to Asian investors.
Recommended: Dr. Martin Haller, Fabian Mühlen (“very dedicated, reliable, constructive, solution-oriented, creates a good negotiating atmosphere”, client; “very pleasant cooperation of a high standard”, “solution-oriented”, competitors), Lars Reubekeul (“very pleasant in negotiations, good jurist”, “highly experienced transaction specialist and reliable negotiating partner”, competitors), Frank Schwem (“very good even in time-critical instructions”, client; “pragmatic”, competitor; finance).
Practice: Broad practice, mostly transactions, also asset management and finance as well as project development and plant construction. (12 partners, 6 counsel, 20 associates, incl. transaction lawyers and finance)
Clients: ?? Deutsche Fonds Holding on sale of shares; Luxembourg Investment on acquisition of project development; Internos Global Investors on hotel acquisition and ongoing advice on rent law; Art-Invest on transaction and financing of shopping center and hotel; Superdry on pan-European expansion.
