Latham & Watkins

The antitrust team here is as ambitious as the entire firm. The Brussels team has been headed for the top of the market for a few years now and once again showed that this is no coincidence. Practice head Dr. Sven Völcker demonstrated his experience with difficult merger controls by representing Lufthansa in its takeover of part of the Air Berlin fleet through an innovative leasing model. He had to defend the deal against strong objections from competing airlines.
Having gained the highly respected Freshfields partner Dr. Michael Esser, L&W’s German offices are now on the offensive. Esser and Dr. Georg Weidenbach, along with a German partner in the US, represented Facebook in a very prominent antitrust case that brought up new questions at the interface with data protection. Another success to round off Weidenbach's outstanding year is his work for VW: the antitrust lawyers made a successful pitch with the litigation practice and are now representing the company in damages claims against a supplier cartel. Now it is the younger lawyers' turn to raise their profiles in high-level cases such as these.
