CLEARY GOTTLIEB STEEN & HAMILTON

Comment: This firm is recommended in corporate and has grown in profile following several years of consolidation. Several developments came together here: in M&A and the related corporate structural measures, the team profits from the firm’s strong international integration as well as from relationships to large corporates it built up itself – the most obvious example is doubtless the Opel sale. The arrival of Ulmer last year has proved to be a real boost, largely because of his own client contacts. Cleary seems to have reached a turning point in Germany. The loss of partner Hanno Sperlich, who was known for Cleary’s traditional focus on capital markets transactions and advised on the interface to corporate, has not harmed the firm.
Strengths: Very good capital markets practice, where partners often advise on stock corporation law.
Recommended: Dr. Gabriele Apfelbacher, Dr. Thomas Kopp, Dr. Oliver Schröder, Dr. Michael Ulmer.
Practice: Very active at international level, incl. for several DAX companies in the US; close ties to financial advisors and investment banks. (5 partners, 5 counsel, plus associates)
Clients: ?? Furukawa on JV with Essex Magnet Wire; GM in connection with sale of Opel/Vauxhall and GM Financials; Westlake Chemical in connection with integration of Vinnolit and ongoing; Edenred on additional stake in Union Tank Eckstein; Agfa-Gevaert in arbitration proceedings.
