FLICK GOCKE SCHAUMBURG

Comment: This recommended corporate practice plays to its strengths: restructuring for German family companies and some corporations, esp. in the energy and insurance sectors and from industry. The team around Erkens is active in the ?energy sector and was bolstered with an experienced team from Freshfields when the latter closed its Cologne office. FGS is now in a position to provide advice on the regulatory issues arising from restructuring work. The loss of the firm’s most renowned corporate partner to date, Prof. Dr. Stefan Simon, to Deutsche Bank in late 2016 does not seem to have had serious consequences for D&O advice or corporate governance work. In a similar vein, the spinoff of parts of the Berlin office (which formed Schnittker Möllmann) caused only limited damage in corporate, with M&A and private equity bearing the brunt. Only corporate litigation suffered a setback, as the active salary partner in this field, Dr. Matthias Schatz, threw his lot in with the spinoff. Fuhrmann remains the most prominent partner here.
Strengths: Integrated approach incorporating ?tax, corporation law and change of corporate form.
Recommended: Dr. Stephan Göckeler, Dr. Martin Oltmanns, Dr. Lambertus Fuhrmann, Dr. Michael Erkens, Dr. Dieter Leuering (“a great lawyer”, client), Dr. Tobias Nießen (employment/change of corporate form).
Practice: Broad practice incl. advice on restructuring and changes of corporate form, law of corporations (D&O advice, squeeze-outs, mergers, AGMs), ?M&A, ?private equity and venture capital and capital markets; corporate litigation. Clients: large corporates and family/Mittelstand businesses as well as shareholders and nonprofit organizations, banks and insurance companies. (Corporate in total: 13 equity partners, 12 salary partners, 25 associates)
