Munich

Munich is home to major banks and insurance companies, private equity and venture capital houses as well as leasing companies, making the city an increasingly significant financial center. In addition, Munich is the first port of call for private trusts and is also a center for intellectual property with institutions such as the German and European Patents Offices and the Federal Patents Court. Together with Düsseldorf, Munich is only behind Frankfurt as regards priorities for law firms.

Significant developments:

  • More and more law firms are flocking to Munich, hiring established teams, unsettling client relationships and stirring up the competition for the best lawyers.
  • Three US firms have opened in the city: Sidley Austin returned to Germany after a two-year hiatus, K&L Gates launched an office with a team from the insolvent King & Wood Mallesons and Smith Gambrell & Russell also opened its doors.
  • German outfits Kliemt, Lubberger Lehment and CBH Rechtsanwälte have also ventured into the Munich market.
